NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories) accreditation is a procedure of giving formal recognition of technical competence for specific tests/ or measurements, based on assessment as per ISO/IEC 17025:2017. NABL accreditation enables laboratories to operate at an internationally acceptable level of competence. Significance of NABL accreditation Ensuring quality in infrastructure development has always been the objective of the Government of Kerala. The technical and operational capacity of implementing agencies- in ensuring quality construction- plays a vital role in resilient and durable infrastructure. For contributing to this, KHRI decided on the upgradation of its existing laboratory facilities. KHRI also considered the construction/revamping of basic infrastructure facilities and procuring plants and equipment with a specific focus on obtaining NABL accreditation. Obtaining NABL Accreditation has brought about the institutional strengthening of KHRI. Furthermore, as an NABL accredited laboratory, it has visibly evolved, thus providing services of the highest quality through competitive staff updated with the latest standards. It has thus resulted in enhanced customer confidence and satisfaction. Challenges & Struggles It has been a challenging process for the KHRI team to work on obtaining NABL accreditation without affecting the routine testing activities.

The crucial challenges faced were time constraints, training the staff for implementing the process, preparation of operational procedures, documentation of the proceedings, upgrading the equipment to NABL standards etc. Hence tremendous efforts were taken by the staff of KHRI to make it a reality. Amid the numerous roadblocks on the way to success, especially during the covid scenario, the then Chief Engineer, PWD Designs, Smt. Madhumathi K. R. encouraged us at every stage in the process. All the staff worked overtime – even working on public holidays - and made an all-out effort in obtaining NABL accreditation. What is NABL accreditation?
